How it Works

Career counselors who specialize in neurodivergence tailor their approach to what you need. They can work with you and any service providers or family members you’d like involved to help:

  1. Look at where you are right now
    • Your strengths and challenges
    • Your past experiences with school, work, or activities
    • What’s going on in your life right now
  2. Use where you are now to figure out what level of support you might find helpful at work
    • Maybe you’d thrive in a specialized program or working for yourself
    • Decide if state resources like the Bureau of Rehabilitation Services might be helpful
    • Maybe you’d do great with formal or informal accommodations
    • Maybe part‑time or full‑time work would fit you better
  3. Figure out what kinds of jobs and work environments might fit you
    • What kinds of tasks and places you’ll thrive in
    • What you’re interested in
    • Your strengths
  4. Explore your options with those types of jobs and environments
    • The social skills you’ll need
    • What you’ll do day‑to‑day
    • What might be harder or easier for you
    • Who it might help to talk to so you can learn more
  5. Make a plan to get the supports you need
    • Figuring out what accommodations you might need on the job
    • Figuring out what other supports outside of work might help you succeed
  6. Navigate the job search process
    • Tapping into your network to make connections with places you might want to work
    • Filling out applications and writing resumes
    • Figuring out if you might need any accommodations during the process (like job shadowing, work trials, or alternative styles of interviews)
  7. Troubleshoot challenges while you’re working
    • Adjusting the plan when life happens
    • Helping you learn how to advocate for yourself on the job
    • Connecting with your support team when challenges come up
